Muxtape: Big Ass Guitars22 May 2008

Oh, good, Muxtape came back. They lost all my songs during the downtime, but I was going to change them all anyway so who cares.

This mux I am calling Big Ass Guitars. The reason for this should be pretty apparent pretty quickly. All massive guitars, and all loud. I’ll mention, also, that there’s a preponderance of things I used to listen to in college, which just makes me feel old. But since I’m feeling expansive, I’m even going to give you some annotation for each song, FEM-style.

  1. Tool – Jerk-Off: I have other Tool records, but I have never liked one as much as I like their Opiate EP. Which probably makes me a bad Tool fan, but ok. This is a wonderful song for hating to.
  2. Drive-By Truckers – Sinkhole: The guitar riff from this is what gave me the idea for this theme in the first place. Just killer. And the “damned if I wouldn’t go to church on Sunday” line.
  3. Slim Cessna’s Auto Club – Red Pirate of the Prairie: I have a feeling that this was on a previous mux, but no matter. The guitar owns this song from the beginning. Yet despite this, they work in some kick ass banjo too and that’s just one small reason to love Slim Cessna.
  4. Butthole Surfers – Dust Devil: Didn’t Beavis and Butt-Head have a bit where they imitated the vocals on this? No matter. Another good selection for raw aggression.
  5. Clutch – Escape From the Prison Planet: My getting hooked on this band was started by this song. Which coincided with me being really into the X-Files while it still didn’t suck. It makes sense if you listen.
  6. Baptist Generals – Burning: It’s really hard to say much about the Baptist Generals. You can just hope to hang on.
  7. Desaparacidos – Mall of America: In case you weren’t aware, this is Connor Oberst’s hardcore band. Yeah, the Bright Eyes guy. Really good for hating politicians in particular to.
  8. Grinderman – Depth Charge Ethel: This is just dirty, dirty rock ‘n’ roll.
  9. Grifters – Bronze Cast: Another one I think I muxed before, but you don’t remember and I don’t care because it kicks ass.
  10. Lard – Forkboy: Jello Biafra + Al Jorgensen from Ministry. 90s overtly political nihilist rock at its best. Turns out Muxtape doesn’t like this file, so instead you get Dead Kennedys Religious Vomit. There’s always room for Jello.
  11. Mötörhead – Bite the Bullet: What? It’s Lemmy. Nothing else need be said.
  12. Metallica & John Oswald – 2net: I used to play this reimagining of Metallica on the air at my college radio station and people would call to tell me that my CD player was broken. I loved that. Also I stole this CD from that radio station and I don’t even feel bad about it.
