Rock ‘n’ Roll is Dead!

Music Recommendations for April 2525 April 2008

Just some things I’ve been listening to more or less constantly of late…

Richard Shindell – Courier — A live record of acoustics about girls, war and long haul trucking and one about Jesus. Imagine if Michael Stipe was a singer/songwriter type and you didn’t want to step on his trachea so much.

Billy Bragg – Must I Paint you a Picture? — As we drag our half-dead polity toward a distant but still inevitable election the content of everything is becoming increasing political. So if I’m going to be buried in politics anyway, some of it should be coming from an English socialist, right? Right.

Slim Cessna’s Auto Club – Cipher — You could maybe call this “psychobilly” but that would really undersell how psycho it is. If an old-fashioned medicine show was fronted by a mescaline-crazed Hank Williams and a schizophrenic revival preacher and then you set it all on fire you’d be getting close.

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds – Dig!!! Lazarus, Dig!!! — I was already on board for whatever Nick Cave was up to, but I’ve really been enjoying what I have come to think of as his trucker moustache phase.

Alina Simone – Placelessness — Kind of like Cat Power if you were a little afraid she was going to beat you up.

Firewater – The Golden Hour Technically this record is not available yet but somehow it fell out of the sky and lodged itself in my iTunes and it’s not my fault so I’m keeping it. But really you’re going to want to listen to this. I would call it World Music except that would make you think of dirty hippies and pan flutes which is not what this is. In the way that Gogol Bordello is “gypsy punk” maybe Firewater has now invented the “world punk” genre.

And I could go on but will not.

Oh, btw, you so should get an Emusic account.
